A compilation of user-centric ideation frameworks by Everest

As a part of the IIBA festival, the wonderful Gizem Kurangil and I ran a workshop to introduce different frameworks that allow us to ideate and develop digital products with the user in mind.

The different user centric ideation frameworks have different output and propose, that can be used in different stages of the project by the team:

  • Personas segmentation — to define and align in who are we designing from
  • Empathy map — to create empathy in the user and define pains and gains
  • How Might We ideation — to generate ideas centred in user pain points
  • Business canvas — to define the context and strategy of our products
  • User journey map — to map out how the users will use our product and identify opportunities i the journey
  • Behaviour change mapping — to define how we are going to affect the user behaviour

1. Personas segmentation

When to use it? When you are starting a project and need to segment your users in audiences or persons

A framework to define and align in who are we designing from moving away from cliches. We focus in characteristics and behaviours of the user that truly differentiate different groups or audiences that we want to serve, moving away from the useless classification by age / gender / socio demographics.

2. Empathy map

When to use it? When you need to bring the team together around a user

The real value of empathy map is to bring the team closer to the user and define the pains and gains that we can use to ideate in different stages of the project. Is very recommended to use this framework after talking with real users, as can be a source of biases if just invented by the team.

3. How might we (H.M.W.)

When to use it? When you need to ideate and you know the user pain points

How Might We questions constructed from real user pain points, generate constructive solutions that are focusing on right problems to solve. Is a powerful ideation tool that follows a few simple rules.

4. Business canvas

When to use it? When you need to clarify the strategy of an idea

One of the favourite frameworks used for product people that constitutes a powerful tool for ideation, contextualising information about our users and strategies.

5. User journey mapping (done well)

When to use it? When you need to define an experience over time or find opportunities to improve an existing one

User journey is not a user flow. A user journey is a complete sum of experiences across channels that contextualises what the user experience in our service and outside it, as well as their emotions and thoughts, to undercover opportunities.

6. Behavioural change

Workshop Miro template here 👉🏽 https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVODWUMa4=/?invite_link_id=367632326824

When to use it? When you have a product that aspires to change user behaviours and need to figure out how to achieve that change

When it comes to creating an experience, being aware of what is the behaviour change we need to create for the users to adopt our products, helps us better define the right functionalities we need.
