Thin Ice

We all stand upon thin ice.

We carefully navigate, stepping slowly, preserving ourselves from harm. In this way, we drift through our lives. We can choose to stay this way forever. The ice is thin, it’s best to be careful. However, careful can lead to monotony, and monotony can keep us on this sheet of ice forever. One day is bound to the next, the next, and the next. No moments stand out over the rest, and our lives disappear with each choreographed step.

Dare we leave the safety of our various shelters?

Dare we take time to pause?

Dare we choose to laugh, smile, or celebrate?

Dare we break away from dated traditions to make changes, to create new memories?

We need to dare, to risk, to struggle, to brush with our own mortality in order to create meaning and affirm our lives. We need to shun the idea of straining the ice; we need to overcome the thought of perishing in the freezing waters.

Should we take care to tread lightly? Or, should we dance our way across?
