Crow Like a Rooster — It’s June 24th, 2023!
The Chicken Whisperer.
You can’t tell from this picture, but this girl is wearing a T-shirt that says Chicken Whisperer. A year ago when she had just moved to town, its annual Rooster Crow Festival was in full swing. She was so thrilled by the idea, she declared, “I want to do that.” And, true to her word, this year, she did. And her rooster won.
She told me she has 37 chickens at home who lay eggs, with nine roosters to protect them. She also has four cats, but they never bother the chickens because they’re terrified of the roosters.
When I asked how she chose which rooster to enter in the contest, she explained that one day, while holding this rooster in her lap, she was watching videos of chickens, and he was watching, too — and making lots of extra noises. She decided then and there that he was the most friendly and talkative of all her roosters. She didn’t need any special strategy — keeping him in the dark, or otherwise trying to trick him, as some contestants do.
Chicken Whisperer, indeed.
Eschewing the cage as soon as the contest was over, she said he doesn’t like wearing a harness but she covers it up by fluffing his feathers over it, and then he can tolerate the leash until they get back home.
