It’s Marathon Season again!

This weekend, runners will be taking over three of our favorite cities, fundraising for Every Mother Counts and raising awareness that for millions of women distance greatly impacts their ability to get healthcare during pregnancy and labor. Distance is a major contributor to why women die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications. We’ll be rooting for runners at the Washington DC Rock and Roll Marathon (Saturday, March 16), the New York Half Marathon (Sunday, March 17) and The Los Angeles Marathon(Sunday, March 17).

You can support our Run EMC teams in these three cities by donating to our Crowdrise pages here:

DC Half Marathon — Rock N’ Roll

LA marathon — team of 10

NYC Half Marathon — team of 20

“if you are in any of these cities and want to support our teams further please consider purchasing something to wear as you cheer them on from our partner, Oilselle. 40% of every purchase goes to EMC.”

Why is distance such a big deal? In many parts of the world, women can’t get to a midwife, doctor or clinic for prenatal care and delivery because it’s too far away or there’s no transportation. In fact, most women have to walk at least 5K to reach basic prenatal and obstetric healthcare and many will travel more than 26.2 miles (the length of a marathon) to receive emergency medical care. Check out this video, The Walk, to see how distance impacts childbirth for millions of women around the world. And check out this video to seeWhy We Run.

Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year — about 800 women every day. The good news is that 90% of these deaths can be prevented. We have the tools and the know-how to save these mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, teachers, doctors, caregivers and community leaders — if we make it a priority. That’s why we run — so millions of women won’t have to walk.
