We’re looking back at how Every Mother Counts’ Crowdrise Holiday Challenge fared and we’re excited to tell you more about the impact your funds will make.

Yeah, we know January is three-weeks old, but we’re still celebrating the New Year. We’re looking back at how Every Mother Counts’ Crowdrise Holiday Challenge fared and we’re excited to tell you more about the impact your funds will make. All told, between your donations and EMC’s matching funds, we raised a total of $30,612 and we couldn’t be more grateful for your generosity and support. All of you who Gave (a safe) Birth this holiday season blew us away. Thank you for every single donation.

What will those funds be used for?

Every penny of those funds will be used to renovate an existing building in the community of Saltadere in Haiti and turn it into a solar-powered birth center. Currently, Saltadere is a mobile clinic site where patients travel to receive basic prenatal care. The new birth center plans to provide comprehensive reproductive and primary care for women and their families.

What will all this cost?

Midwives for Haiti anticipates that the construction, launch, and first year operating expenses for the new clinic will cost just under $60,000.That will include construction and building costs, grounds work, plumbing, electrical work, solar panels, and water tank, as well as beds, exam tables, dopplers and other critical supplies needed to get the clinic up and running. EMC will also cover first year operating expenses including midwives, security, laundry and cleaning, costs for providing prenatal and primary care and deliveries.

If anyone asks you what you’ll be doing in 2014, say you’ll be helping build Midwives for Haiti’s new birth center because it’s your donation that’s making that possible. We’ll be keeping you in the loop by posting about progress in Saltadere regularly. Thanks again for your ongoing support and for Giving Birth — safe ones.
