Libraries provide helpful and accessible information for free! However, you almost always need a library card before using these resources. It may not be easy to think about adding another card to your wallet, but the benefits far outweigh the process it takes to get one. Library cards are free! Here’s a basic overview of this vital resource and how you can get one.

What Exactly Are Library Cards?

Much like getting an identification card allows you to drive, a library card will enable you to utilize library resources entirely. They are sometimes referred to as a borrower’s identification card. These can also be used online or by visiting all libraries within your local library system.

Do I Have to Pay to Get One?

Many people associate monetary payments with cards, leading to understandable hesitation. However, library cards are almost always free. Also, unlike “complementary” store cards, you’ll have complete, obligation-free access to a wide range of library resources, including free access to books, computers, office supplies, and more!

How Do I Get a Library Card?

If you’re interested in getting a library card, visit your local library’s website or contact them via phone. They may have resources devoted to library card assistance.

Obtaining a library card requires a photo for verification. You may also need to provide your driver’s license as another form of identification. A legal guardian can get library cards if their application is approved.

What Can I Get With a Library Card?

Once you’ve obtained your card, anything offered by your library is free for you to use! It can include common resources such as books, movies, audiobooks, and other related library materials.

However, having a card comes with unique opportunities that you wouldn’t typically associate with a library. Specific services like maker spaces, fitness classes, museum passes, and rentable tools are accessible with a library card. These are only a few of the many resources libraries offer to community members!
