Summertime comes with its fair share of sunny days and vacation getaways. Whether you’re taking care of your child during their summer break or a busy working adult in need of relaxation, reading is a great way to destress! However, sitting down and reading is a lot easier said than done. Nevertheless, reading is beneficial for your overall health and wellbeing. Here are some reasons you should consider getting back into reading over the summer.

Reading Exercises Your Brain

Research proves that reading exercises your brain. Some brain regions lit up in one study when participants read a novel over nine days. Reading may prevent cognitive decline. A 2013 study conducted by Rush University Medical Center noticed a correlation between lower plaques and tau protein tangles.

Reading Can Improve Your Mental Health

Reading is a form of self-care. Reading can reduce symptoms of intense mental illness, particularly depression. Since depression elevates feelings of loneliness, reading can alleviate some of these symptoms when you connect with certain characters. Overall, reading is a great stress reliever; it helps you temporarily escape and take a moment to breathe. Taking a moment to relax and read can be especially helpful during the summer months when you may be on vacation or have more free time.

Reading Increases Empathy

When you read about various characters going through unique experiences, it helps you see their perspective. Books allow readers to step into someone else’s shoes, particularly when reading fiction. A 2006 study discovered a strong connection between fiction readers and increased levels of empathy. When the main characters live through experiences outside of their own, it makes readers empathize with them.

How to Get Back into Reading

If it’s been a while since you read a book, that’s okay! We’re busy people, and everyday activities can make it challenging to make time for reading. However, it’s never too late to get back into it, especially if you have some extra time during the summer. If you find it challenging to read handheld books, consider switching to audiobooks. Otherwise, your local librarian would be happy to provide you with some book recommendations. Just remember that there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to read so long as you enjoy yourself!
