Egyptologists working on Relief from the tomb in Saqqara

Recent archaeological discoveries, in the month of May, have found beautiful wall reliefs inside a previously undiscovered tomb in Saqqara.

“Reliefs found at a chapel built for maker of gold foil for the pharaoh’s treasury”

The significance of these discoveries is explained by the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri:

[The excavation] introduces new individuals that were yet unknown in the historical sources.

Archaeologists Discover the Oldest Egyptian Mummy Covered in Gold

First, it is important to clarify the title…while this mummy is the oldest to be covered in gold, it is not the oldest mummy in existence.

That being said, this is a massive discovery as it is the oldest non-royal mummy ever discovered!

Mummified remains of Hekashepes with gold draped across the body (not many pictures have been taken so it is quite difficult to see…more pictures will be taken as research continues)

The mummy, being the remains of Hekashepes, was described in an interview with Zahi Hawass and his excavation crew:

When the lid was raised, we found the mummy of a man covered with gold leaf…This mummy is the oldest complete mummy covered with gold…

Archaeologists also found a plethora of Old Kingdom stone statues (2700 to 2200 BCE), with the total number coming out to 14, showing more of the artistic trends and culture of the time.

Pictures of the Buddha statue found in Berenike

In the Ancient Egyptian city of Berenike, archaeologists discovered a two-foot-tall Buddha statue.

Notably, it is the first-ever Buddhist statue discovered west of Afghanistan. The Smithsonian writes:

Made from Mediterranean marble, it provides new evidence of trade between ancient Rome and India

This discovery begs the question of what other ties ancient civilizations have to each other that we have previously doubted.
