Resting on the island of Crete lies the ruins of a once-great civilization, forgotten for thousands of years. Lost to memory and time, the Minoan civilization is one of both great mystery and familiarity.
Today, I want to revisit the Aegean civilization of the Minoans. Being the subject of one of my first articles, their history is one of my all-time favorites.
What I love so much about the Minoans is their relaxed, vibrant culture contrasted with their untimely and unknown demise.
Who were they?
Reigning for over 2,000 years, the Minoans started off as humble fishermen off the coasts of Crete. As their seafaring abilities improved, so did trade which helped grow their cities.
However, around 1100 BCE, the Minoans would disappear with little explanation of what happened or where they went.
While we may know a decent amount about their physical culture, it is mostly based on speculation. Most of our knowledge comes from their countless frescos found amount ruins.
