The Corinthian column is iconic in the history of Antiquity. Originating in Ancient Greece and continuing on to Ancient Rome, these columns have a surprisingly detailed history.

Being influential in architecture all across the world, the Corinthian column serves as a universal symbol of elegance and luxury.

Its name originates from Greek myth

A common question one might ask is where the name Corinthian comes from. Coming from the city of Corinth, the myth behind it inspired both the name and design of the famed column.

The myth comes from Vitruvius’ De architectura. In this, he tells the story of a girl from Corinth who passed away after an unmentioned illness. He writes:

After her burial, her nurse, collecting a few little things which used to give the girl pleasure while she was alive, put them in a basket, carried it to the tomb, and laid it on top thereof, covering it with a roof-tile so that the things might last…
