Recently the NBA’s one and done rule has came into spotlight because of Adam Silver’s comments regarding the issue. I believe the NBA should get rid of the rule for a couple of reasons. First off the players aren’t gaining that much maturity from spending one year in college. Chris Barnewell (Source 1) wrote “ the rule has outlived the usefulness it had”. In most cases the few players that go to college for one year and leave to go to the NBA seem more focused on the money to be made in te following year and who can blame them. This rule is keeping players from making millions of dollars which can even cause them to lose a lot of money. Grant Hughes a Bleacher report reporter (Source 2) talked about how players can lose a lot of money by going to the NCAA and getting hurt and falling in the draft. The point is that these players are forced to take the risk of playing in the NCAA without getting payed with no reward. The other side of the argument is that college basketball serves as the NBA’s farm system. But with the emergence of the G-league college basketball is no longer the NBA’s farm system or at-least can easily be replaced. Bucks GM explained to Business insider (Source 3) that “You’ve got a G-League franchise that’s an hour-and-a-half away for us — and by the way that franchise is running the same offense and defense schemes as we are, they have the same medical staff philosophy, performance philosophy as we have”. All of these points, in my mind, make it logical and necessary to eliminate this outdated rule. It’s time for the NBA to take a step forward once more.
