Technology is taking over things in the world, everyday emerging technologies solve problems in new ways. It is important therefore that we learn some concepts in technology to be able to move along with the recent changes.

Here’s a compilation of tech words featured in week 1: bit.ly/tech-word-of-the-day-week-1

Enjoy!

Day 8: — 404 ERROR

Ever visited a website and seen this and you’re like “What’s this? What’s happening?”. Well don’t worry you’ll get to know about it today.

404 Error is a common website error message displayed by a browser indicating that an internet address cannot be found. It indicates that the browser was able to communicate with the given server but the server was unable to find the specific website requested.

The website hosting server will typically generate a “404 Not Found” web page when a user attempts to follow a broken or dead link.

People who land on this page are most likely looking for specific content usually via a link. So you could redirect them somewhere else on your website.

You could redirect them to a search form where they can search for the specific content they’re looking for or you could redirect them to the home page of your website.

Day 9: — CAPTCHA

Ever visited a website that has an online form and at the end of the online form, you’re asked to enter text from a distorted image or tick all images that have a particular object? I’m pretty sure you must have!

But what is the aim of a Captcha? Captchas are used to verify that a human is entering data into the form and not a robot. Text in the images that make up a Captcha are usually distorted, wavy or may be highly irregular making it nearly impossible for an automated program to recognize it.

Did you know? The name “CAPTCHA” is an acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Now you know!

Day 10: — VPN

Heard of it before right? Very popular.

VPN means Virtual Private Network. It creates a secure connection between your devices and the internet. How? I’ll try and explain!

Now every user has an IP address, that IP address is used anytime you go online. Your IP address is your personal identification code for your internet connection. It reveals your location and make you recognizable and traceable online. But VPNs prevent that.

Normally, when you connect to the internet without a VPN, your data traffic is sent to the internet directly and can be traced.

With a VPN, your data traffic is first sent to an external server through an encrypted secure connection and then sent on to the internet.

As a result of this, you’ll be given a different IP address and be assigned a different location, making you untraceable except someone uses advanced techniques like WebRTC Leads which has the ability to still collect your data even if you’re using a VPN.

Day 11:- HTML

What comes you to your mind when you hear of HTML? Do you think of a programming language? Sorry if you did! You thought wrong…..

Many think and believe HTML is a programming language, but funny and surprisingly it’s a Markup Language. HTML means ‘HyperText Markup Language’..

‘Hypertext’ means that it is made up of hyperlinks or links that direct to a new page or a new section in the website.

And it’s a ‘Markup Language’ because of the way tags are used to define the page layout and elements within the page.

In recent times, websites have become more advanced and interactive, yet HTML remains one of the fundamental language used to develop webpages.

Day 12:- DATA SCIENCE

What comes to your mind when you hear of Data Science? The study of data? Correct! 👍

But it’s pretty more than that.

Data Science also has to do with the different steps involved in recording, storing and analysing this data to get meaningful information.

In recent years, there has been a vast increase in the amount of data collected.

Years back we only heard of megabytes of data, but now we have petabytes (1000 terabytes) of data and therefore the need for Data Science to analyse these huge amount of data.

This type of data is known as “Big Data”.

Day 13:- COOKIES

Ever visited a website and you were told to accept cookies? What are cookies and what do they do? I’ll try explain.

Cookies are small pieces of data generated by a website you visit and stored on your computer’s hard drive. They help websites remember important information about you. Information like your name, email address, house address, passwords are remembered by cookies.

Is accepting cookies dangerous? No! Cookies are encrypted and cannot collect any personal information about you from your machine. They cannot contain viruses, cannot access hard drive, cannot access your personal information and cannot send emails or control functions on your device.

Day 14:- AVATAR

Which Avatar came to your mind? I guess you had the wrong Avatar in mind.

An avatar in tech refers to a character that represents an online user. It allows people to represent themselves online however they want. AVATAR is an acronym for ‘A Virtual Attempt To Attain Representation’.

Avatars are popularly used in websites and most online role-playing games. They can also be used in internet chat systems, internet messaging systems, and blogs, particularly in virtual reality.

Avatars allow people to represent themselves online in whatever way they want. Users can customize characters that are completely different from who they really are.
