A dramatic instance of help
I was “getting away” from a scene I had to leave. I ended up hitchhiking in the pitch dark on a lonely Maine road. Finally a man stopped and took me to his home which turned out to be near where I was heading. He put me up. Made nothing of it. Asked for nothing.
I always thought of this as my main story of help.
But individual acts however wonderful are drops in a bucket that will never fill.
Communal and social moves are also necessary.
Helpfulness includes
creating local democracies
moving to universal basic income
cutting military investment in half
working everywhere to reduce violence
and
helping victims of ongoing harm.
Helpfulness is social and political.
It is past business
It is the sum of good in the world.
Stow your Herculean conscience.
The world is not on you shoulders.
Don’t advertise good deeds.
Conspicuous charity is part of the problem, not the answer.
Do not support false philanthropy.
The rich have other motives than helping.
Help with your being not your wallet.
Speak out daily. Organize basic income. Support arms reduction.
See help as change.
Help yourself.
You are of ultimate importance. You deserve the best. All do.
