Eve could remember from her days at Oxford things that would stand her in good stead should she be stranded in a sea of semioticians. She knew the notion of signs did not originate in the 19th century either in the precincts of Saussure or Peirce. She was well schooled in the differences between those recent progenitors. Saussure was a dualist and Peirce a realist with scholastic foundations.
