Free Spirit
I was born as a dew drop, I slept on a blade of grass,
Then the sun drew me in, and I became one with the light,
I floated in the skies as a cloud, I came back to earth as rain,
I lived on the trees, and I swam with the rivers,
I lost myself inside the earth,
I was the beautiful scent that arose when it rained yesterday
You can see me in forests, I’m the green of the foliage
I’m the fire that crackles in a campfire,
I’m the stars that make up The Universe,
I’m a free spirit.
I’m the fairy your grandmother told tales about,
I’m the angel you call upon for protection,
I’m that positive vibe you long for
I’m a free spirit.
I’m the caged bird your neighbour thinks is beautiful
I’m the fawn learning to sprint in the grasslands, not for a moment suspecting
That his mother was about to be shot down because she’s gorgeous,
I’m the little girl that lives down the road,
Who charms you with her dimpled smiles and bouncy curls,
With her wide, innocent eyes and curiosity,
The same little girl who is oblivious
To what the world has in store for her when she becomes a woman,
The oppression, the injustice, the stifling of dreams,
The stigma, the forces that will want to make her submissive
The leers, the sneers, the objectification
I’m also the smile she will smile
When she finds a beautiful place in this big, bad world,
When she stands up for herself, when she refuses to be labelled,
When she refuses to bow down to the mighty,
I’m a free spirit.
