Jesus thought about his education. It had been progressing for years. And it seemed to have no end. It did not seem hurried. And he knew what it was for. But he also saw, more and more, that he was not being batted around by some outside force. He was an actor. A doer. What was happening came as much from him as from Abba.

That was in fact the secret. It was his own power as much as the amazing reality of Abba that determined the relationship, its content and character.

Today, he was seized with a question to which he had no answer.

“Abba, I do not know why I ask you this. But it has bothered me. I have heard that there are places on earth where people do terrible things. They cut off people’s heads. They have strange beliefs. They think that they can kill at will. What does it mean if I call out for justice here, and there are places where such cries would be laughed at. Or I might lose my head for asking.”

“Jesus, why do you think we are doing what we are doing?”

“We talk every day almost,” Abba.” We move slowly but surely toward a time when I will go out and say and do things.”

“Yes, that is so, but you should also know that we are progressing. Do you know what that means?”

“Tell me.”

“Your headhunters and others who act with savage intent are signs of a world that has always existed. The reality of freedom has always existed as well, both for good and for evil.”

“Freedom for evil?”

“Evil is what you are describing, Jesus. It is no different than the evil of those who have marauded, crushing whole peoples as they move. Savagery is past and present. Progress is slow. You will help speed it up.”

“Why is freedom itself so cruel?”

“It isn’t. We cannot go in when someone acts on the belief that the head of some innocent child will create a blessing. We cannot stop this dastardly action. What we can do is give each life without exception the dignity of consciousness, a capacity to see and know who they are.”

“How can that be?”

“Jesus, the very first time we talked. it came from you. When people die, they get what they want. That’s what you said. They face exactly what they are. They see what they have been.”

“How?”

“They are saved. What is it in you that operates when we talk? The same you you are aware of in dreams. You’ve seen swarms of insects, Jesus. There are endless swarms of human beings who have been here, real as can be. Nothing is lost. Creation is a school. Your head choppers are students. When one dies he will see his life with perfect memory. He will be aware of what he did. The child whose head was severed will be aware of what has happened and of the life that was denied. She will see everything she could have seen. I am telling you a great deal, Jesus, but you said the same thing when we met long ago.”

“A school.”

“Exactly.”

Jesus shook his head as he made his way through the darkening sky. Did he dare to tell Mary that there was no death? Well tjere was death. But there was survival. Was life really a school? Would people believe that?
