Medium Tweet — Facebook exemplifies but is hardly alone

Soon I will not identify these posts as Tweets. Twitter persists in separating me from 230K followers and refusing to reply to last week’s explanatory posts showing that I could not comply with their request for a code because I am not set up to do it. The fact that there is only ONE alternative is indication of their binary captivity. But that is not the subject of this tweet.

Voila.

The article to which this Facebook post (remember no Twitter!) leads, skewers FB for its prodigal use of data about us to lure advertisers into providing them with lucre. The lucre is considerable. It is almost easier than inheritance or successful fraud. It takes the most gullible of souls — people — as a commodity and sell us to advertisers so they can ply us with things. There must be a better way but this is how the WEB works. And Twitter and Google are involved along with others. It reifies us, turns us into things. It is also stupid by mi lights. If I infer what they know about me as useful to interest me in products — well no inference! I am blissfully of subliminal efforts and such. I guy nothing as a result. That is my response to the world we are in and I am hardly alone. There is certainly nothing admirable about selling inferential data. If we are public it is because we value a world that is more open, not more exploitative.
