Metaphysics is Metaphysics Shallow or Deep

One of the nice things about writing here is that anyone in the world could read but almost no one does. The result is a sense of freedom of expression. No need to fear because no one will hear, That sort of thing. Peirce had the same problem.

Anyway, he speaks of deep metaphysics below. The exception I take is based on what my experience of metaphysics is. I take metaphysics to be the experience of the world of mystery (what we don’t or can’t know) as penetrable.

When I have had such experiences, they have led me to assume that there is a clear and direct link between what we do with our minds and the physical realty of our lives. Can I prove this? To my self, yes. Clinically, I don’t know.

Some things remit. Is remission due to mental effort involving conversation with one deemed universal? I would say so. If there are millions of such testimonies, there is a more likely trajectory in the truth department. This is not up there in the commercial analytics business.

Depth is in the eye of the beholder.

Anything metaphysical breaks down the wall between what we sense is demonstrable and what we feel depends on things we cannot see, even though the effects of our alleged interactions may be physical.

134. I think you will agree with me that these ten opinions should be revised, and if necessary, corrected, before going any further. In regard to each one, you first wish to consider precisely what the opinion is, and next what reason there may be for adhering to it. We need not carry the discussion into any deep metaphysics. Simple answers will do to begin with; only they must be distinct and explicit. Profounder insight may come later.
