My friend

Naming Abba — Adventures of the Child Jesus (First Episode)

Jesus loved to get outside the town where no one was.

It contrasted with the cacophony of voices on the streets. There, he could look into the eyes of the fat and lean, the young and old, male and female, and see bits of holiness, sparks of life, hints of goodness. But just as often he saw lowered lids and vacancy.

Such love as he felt was too abstract. He did not like that. He felt the need to connect to all. To share with all. To be with all. Out here, he thought, “Why not? I’ll pray. I know there’s someone who will hear me. Not one whose home is the Temple. Not a bully or a superman or hidden or bowed down to. Not a smiter of enemies. A true friend.

“A true friend cares about real people. He delights in signs of life. He takes an interest in the harmed. And those who do the harm. He is not locked away. He is not praised for killing enemies. He cares for everyone, not just a tribe.”
