Pay writers directly, not through publications

Paying folk for great writing?? If I am not mistaken this is tied to making publications either pay or not. That is where I drew a line. I do not believe publications should be paid. If the goal is to reward great writing reward them directly. If the present system allows that fine. If not, amend it.
