Harvesting Insight: Stardew Valley’s Commentary on American Culture

And why it matters for all players of the game

As I think about how I’m going to start this story, the words of a Miley Cyrus song from 2008 are unavoidably in my mind.

“Wake up America, we’re all in this together, it’s our home so let’s take care of it.”

What strikes me about this song is not only its catchy tune and the nostalgia of the early days of Miley but also the wish for a better America. One where citizens work together and are united by the same wish to make their country a better place.

Now, I’m not American and can’t claim to fully understand the complexities of this cultural identity, but I’ve travelled to enough states to gather that this is an important vision for most Americans. It’s in the flags that are hung on drives throughout its vast country, and the extravagance of 4th of July celebrations.

But what irks me about this country and its sense of prideful exceptionalism, is that it doesn’t match up with reality.

A bashful sense of American individualism haunts most communities across the country, but especially those who are in the Team Trump camp.
