If you spend nights tossing and turning, counting sheep for hours, you’re not alone.

With this simple technique, many of us struggle with falling asleep and drift off in as little as 37 seconds.

Let’s address the elephant in the room: electronic devices. We all love screens, but did you know an iPhone can sabotage your sleep? The blue light emitted from devices can disrupt your body’s production of the sleep hormone melatonin, making it harder to doze off. Put away those screens at least an hour before bedtime. Pick up a book instead.

The 4–7–8 Breathing Technique

Let’s delve into the magic of the 4–7–8 breathing technique.

  1. Imagine standing at the edge of a tranquil lake, inhaling the fresh mountain air deeply through your nose while counting to four.
  2. Hold your breath for a count of seven and feel your tension melting away.
  3. Finally, exhale slowly through your mouth, counting to eight, and feel the day’s weight lifting off your shoulders.
  4. Repeat this cycle four times. Feel the anxiousness slip away.

Soon you’re in a deep slumber before you know it.

Don’t just take my word for it. Dr. Andrew Weil, the creator of the 4–7–8 technique, has more than 40 years of experience in integrative medicine and has helped countless people improve their sleep habits. By slowing down your heart rate and focusing on your breath, this technique promotes relaxation and calmness, making it easier to fall asleep.

Incorporating the 4–7–8 breathing technique into your nightly routine is a small change that could significantly impact your sleep quality.

With just 76 seconds out of the 86,400 seconds you have daily, you could be on your way to a better night’s sleep. Put down that screen, take a few deep breaths, and prepare for a restful slumber.
