Have you ever considered the short and perilous life of a sperm?

The “average man” ejaculates between 40 million to a billion sperm in a single ejaculation. Sperm retained in the female reproductive tract (lots drip out) must: 1) traverse the cervix, 2) be transported through the uterus to the oviduct (Fallopian tubes), 3) undergo the process of capacitation to be fertile, 4) bind to the ovum ovulated by the female, 5) undergo the acrosome reaction to attain fertilizing capability, and 6) penetrate the outer layer of the ovum (zona pellucida) and fuse with the oocyte plasma membrane.
