He sipped his coffee. Then took another drag off his cigarette. Gray slush fell from a gray December Seattle sky. Too cold to wash anything clean with rain and too warm to blanket the streets in fresh whiteness.

The fingers that wrapped themselves around his paper cup of hot coffee were the only part of him that were warm. Even his cardboard sign was drenched through. So much so, that his one word “give”, scrawled in black ink, had bled into an unreadable mess.

He had his notebook full of poems stuffed in his back pocket. Two blank pages remained. A stubbed pencil jammed between the pages dug into his skin through his tight…
