How bad does an airline have to be before an airport asks you to leave? Boutique Air just found out when McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport and the Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority (MKL) decided they’d had enough and petitioned the Department of Transportation to have the carrier stop serving the airport.
Boutique Air flies from MKL to St. Louis and Atlanta under an Essential Air Service (EAS) agreement. Under EAS, the Department of Transportation subsidizes air service to smaller airports that meet certain conditions. Carriers bid on these routes and have to meet certain performance metrics to keep them.
