I had nothing to do with where I was born or who my parents were. I arrived in the U.S. with no say in the matter.

Many citizens in wealthy countries believe they had something to do with how much better their lives are than someone born in Afghanistan, Haiti, or Venezuela’s slums.

We like to think we lifted ourselves to the top of the world. But we don’t realize the plate was already spinning when we got here. All we have to do is not screw it up, but we struggle with that.

There are young people in Brazil’s favelas picking trash from dumps and kids in the Philippines’ slums cleaning out cemetery…
