Gone is that comforting medley of random sound from the outer world that wraps itself around you like a security blanket. We are not even aware of it — until it stops and the silence deafens us.

And we ache for the return of the untuned untidy orchestra of life — laughter, traffic rumble and roar, dog bark, child crying, glass smashes, horn blares, bird twitter, leaf rustle, wind hustles, steel on steel, cars crash, heels on pavement, water trickles, girl giggles, banging, argument, baby cries, door slams, rhythm and beat, screechy siren, ambulance…
