Mars is not an option. Elon Musk and Richard Branson have it wrong. Just because they’re billionaires with imagination doesn’t mean that they’re not suffering from hubris or delusion.

Musk wants to have the first cargo ship on Mars in 2022. Branson means to have a ship in orbit around Mars in 2022. That’s next year. NASA thinks that they won’t get to Mars to somewhere between 2030 and 2050.

The accepted understanding is that billionaires want to colonise Mars because they think Earth will not be habitable. Yet it will cost less money to make earth habitable than to terraform Mars. We also have the technology to fix up earth, but we don’t have the technology to terraform Mars.
