Mud-puddling butterflies provide a rare opportunity for the lucky nature photographer.

Photographing wild butterflies on the wing is often a challenge — unless you look for (or luck into) a shallow mud puddle where large numbers are gathering to sip minerals from wet mud. In October 2009, I stumbled on just such a lucky spot near Villa Tunari, Bolivia. In less than two hours, I observed countless species and photographed a good many even with my amateur equipment.
