Staying One Step Ahead of the Dog.

I am often asked, “What’s the most difficult thing about trusting a guide dog?”

Without a doubt, it’s when he is distracted by another dog. So, I need to be a step ahead of him by being ready for it.

When another dog has grabbed Cooper’s attention, I’ll say, “Leave it,” and when he looks at me, I give him a treat/reward.

I carry ordinary dog treats for when he points out door handles, steps, or the counter at Starbucks. For distractions, I have treats ready, which are impossible for most dogs to resist.

My guide dog and I visit schools to raise awareness for sight loss; the kids’ questions make great stories! Plus, I love books and writing book reviews. 🇨🇦
