Today, 8 December, marks the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, but because South Africa was seven hours ahead of New York, I was asleep when he died that Monday night.

I awoke Tuesday morning to the news and burst into tears; joined millions around the world in ten minutes of silence on 14 December 1980 to remember Lennon.

He would have celebrated his 80th birthday on 9 October.

Imagine is arguably his most famous and enduring song — evidenced by many people performing it today.
