Video game enthusiasts can tell you exactly what they think any specific game should cost. Some of them can do this at a glance, almost by instinct. It’s something I just don’t see among consumers of most other entertainment products — people may quibble over, say, novels being too pricey, but they won’t go through a list of titles and name the ideal price for each one individually.
So what’s the distinction? Why is price such a sticking point for this one particular medium, and what guides people when they make these decisions?
