#2 Fortnite and The Battle Royale Genre

There is no doubt that Fortnite was the game of 2018 and if it keeps up the hype, then it could might even be the game of 2019. Fortnite is a free to play game where you drop into an island and fight the other 99 players that you are with. I would assume all of you know what Fortnite is and if not, you might just be living under a rock. But the thing that I bet a lot of you don’t know is the history of Battle Royales.

A Battle Royale is a game where you are by yourself or with a squad, and you are trying to be the last man standing. The first battle royale game was released in 2013 by a guy named Brendan Greene, who went by “PlayerUnknown,” he originally created the game DayZ as a zombie game but they soon began implementing a Battle royale into their game. After that, he put assisted in the creation of a game called H1Z1, which was a battle royale game. After this, he became a developer at a company called Bluehole. Bluehole released a wildly successful game called PlayerUnknown’s Battleground. It had a ton of success, but after about a year of being out, the game got very money hungry and soon they had very little players online playing their game.

After the fall of PUBG, Fortnite arrised as the superior battle royal. Being a free game and the pure replay-ability of the game made it a great game to play with your friends or even by yourself. I enjoy Fortnite and never really played PUBG, but the fact that PUBG tried to sue Fortnite for “stealing their game idea” is completely ridicules and one of the reasons why I wont ever play PUBG.
