‘Delivered’ is a Misery-inspired pregnancy chiller with unexplored racial connotations

A review of the new horror movie, on Hulu now

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Hulu has released Delivered, the latest installment of their monthly holiday-inspired horror film series, Into the Dark. The Blumhouse-produced series has been uneven; its best installments have featured smart, nuanced plots that deal with complex social issues through a horror lens, while its weaker entries choose to leave thematic material on the table in favor of familiar scares and thrills.

Delivered falls somewhere in the middle. The film tells the story of Valerie (Natalie Paul), a pregnant woman anticipating the birth of her child with her husband Tom (Michael Cassidy). Between OBGYN appointments, they fill their days with regular mommy yoga at a place called, incredibly, Momasté. It’s there that they meet Jenny (Tina Majorino), a funny, charismatic pregnant woman who wants to be friends. Valerie is open to the idea, excited at the prospect of a “mommy club” once their kids are born.

One day, though, they head to Jenny’s remote farmhouse for dinner. Valerie feels woozy after eating, and before long, Jenny’s baby bump has disappeared. She’s not pregnant, after all; turns out, it was a ruse to get close to the expectant couple, because…
