Happy Quibi Launch Day, everyone! I’m sure we’ve all been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Quibi, the new streaming service on the block, ever since those enigmatic ads dropped during the Super Bowl and the Oscars that used the term as a unit of time. Quibi, you see, stands for Quick Bites: the service is releasing content in 5–10 minute bite-sized chunks, an episode a day, instead of dropping multi-hour sagas all at once.

The idea is that modern attention spans have shrunk to the point where all we can do is consume content a few minutes at a time, while in line for coffee or while on our lunch breaks. I’m not sure that’s true, and it’s especially unfortunate that the service is launching as it is in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, when people are shut indoors looking for content more than ever. I don’t have time to kill while waiting for coffee anymore. I don’t have long bus rides to fill. What I have are hours and hours of sitting on the couch, desperately trying not to look at the news.

Also, it’s just made for mobile. You can’t cast it to your TV and you can’t watch it on your laptop. There isn’t even an iPad app. This is made to watch on your phone…
