An Open Letter to Senator Patrick Toomey R-PA from a Constituent
Senator Toomey,
My name is Nicholas Sones and I am twenty-five years old. I have had a heart transplant. Before that heart transplant, Senator, my health was always poor. I couldn’t live a normal life like other children; I never knew what it was like to run until the year 2015. Before needing a transplant I was born with a rare heart condition called Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. In layman’s terms what this means is I was born with only half of my heart. I’ve taken medicine since as long as I can remember. I never gave politics much of a thought until the Election of one the Greatest Presidents we as a nation have ever had, President Obama. It was his election which got me involved in the political process. It was his election which is the reason why I am a Democrat, a Democrat who was considering voting for Governor Kasich if he were the nominee. He wasn’t so I voted for the Secretary of State. It’s the reason why I voted against you, not once but twice. I supported and worked on Sestak’s campaign, and then I supported and voted for Katie McGinty. Sestak’s campaign was my first we lost. I have worked in the political system all of my adult life, and I will continue to do s, because I have been afforded great opportunities by this nation and I want to see these opportunities extended to all of our people. Now you are my senator, you represent me and the 479,000 Pennsylvanians who rely on the Affordable Care Act for their insurance, and Senator this is a number from 2010. The insurance rate in this state of ours has fallen by 37 percent. Now it may be easy to deny facts, but you can’t deny the fact that the law is working and will remain working. One of my prescriptions costs over 5,000 dollars a month. Without insurance, how is this fair? How is this ethical?
What do you say to the young man who wants to serve his nation but may not be alive to do so Senator, if a repeal of this law takes place? How is this ethical?
Senator, if you and your senate colleagues feel that insurance is something that people don’t deserve in this nation then why Senator, are you in the business of helping people?
Your vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act is simply wrong. There is really, sir, no other word to explain it. You are voting to strip 479,000 hard working Pennsylvanians of their health insurance and this is wrong. Now I’m willing to listen if you and your party are willing to offer up a plan to solve the issue of what occurs when a repeal takes place, but I have yet to see this plan. The people of this state have yet to see this plan. The people of this state deserve to see this plan. You have a responsibility to show us that plan. And if you don’t then you, sir, should resign. Where is the replacement Senator? How much longer must we wait to see it? (We’ve seen his plan and its rotten to the core)
Finally, Senator, I want to thank President Obama and the other Democrats who bravely took a vote to ensure that people like myself will have health insurance. And I want to say to you that its time for you to do your part to protect people like myself.
Thanks,
Nicholas Sones
P.S. I sent this to Senator Toomey a while back, I’ll tweet his response to my letter.
