“Liberal Coastal Elites”

January 29, 2017

I just finished reading an article that, like so many others, mentioned the “liberal coastal elites”. If I see that term coming from anything but a trumpster, I’ll throw up.

Let’s not kid ourselves — Trump and his toadies are waging a war on cities and the people who live in them. And we are not a minority. 63% of the population lives in cities. 68% of the mayors of the top 100 cities in the US are Democrats, and 6% are independents.

Why do the trumpsters wage war on us? Because cities force people to deal with all kinds of people. It’s much harder to be a misogynist, racist, anti-LGBTQ, or what have you, when you live in a city. You depend on immigrants to make things work.

Sure, we need to reach out to people in rural areas who are receptive to our message. But let’s not do it to the exclusion of city people. Yes, people in the rural areas of Ohio have it hard. But so do young millenials living in Los Angeles.

The link between them is an authoritarian coup that will disenfranchise everyone who isn’t in the top 2%. Those whose minds are clouded over by racism won’t get that, but I think there are at least 10% of trump voters who can get it, and we need to win them over.

I urge all my friends to look at Indivisible.com, Justice Democrats, and all similar organizations that realize that compromise with trump and the republican thugs who bow down before him is not a viable path. Just like the Tea Party, we must implement this on a national and LOCAL level.

We must take over the Democratic Party, just as the Tea Party took over the republicans. If our local representative wants to play footsy with the republicans, we must straighten them out or primary them. If we’re represented by a republican, we must confront them at every opportunity. And we must find people to run for EVERY office, from dog catcher on up.

Make no mistake about it — trump and his toadies have declared war on America and American values. He’s not going to “pivot” or somehow become more “presidential.”

I’m sure there are many other fine groups, but this is a good place to start.
