Hope you’re Thriving!

It’s been a different week with a trip to Melbourne for a two-day strategic planning workshop and a day of exploring Melbourne. A few years ago, I’d be flying every few weeks, but it’s now quite different.

One thing that seems to be becoming normal, however, is apologies from the aircrew. “Good morning passengers, sorry for the delay” seems to be the norm for aircraft crew nowadays. Also, I saw a news report this week that 10 percent of checked-in luggage at Sydney airport is getting lost or not making it onto the plane. They’re doing their best, but there are certainly some challenges for the airlines as they try to rebuild!

One of the other interesting things from this past week was meeting a new potential client who had sold his business to a large multi-national last year. Through that process, he’d achieved a higher multiple because of the work he’d done with a coach in another country, and when the multi-national asked him to start a new division in Australia, he had one condition — that he gets a leadership team coach.

He’d experienced the value over a few years that the coach had brought to his team and now realised that this had become a non-negotiable for his success. Of course, the executives at the multi-national were perplexed and tried to talk him out of it a few times or offer other perks, but he was adamant, he wanted the best coach.

Seven inflation charts that flip the economic script

This week I came across this interesting post from McKinsey, which demonstrates just how inflation is affecting different parts of the economy.

From the article.

“Every morning a new headline underscores growing economic concerns: Highest inflation since the 1970s. Central banks aggressively raising rates. Consumer sentiment at record lows. Commodity prices near all-time highs. Clearly inflation has, at a minimum, altered the economic mood, and potentially reset the path of global and national economies worldwide for years to come. Here, we use the best and most recent publicly available data to offer seven charts illustrating inflation’s insidious progress.”

They go on to outline the following charts:

  • Each country’s inflation compared to expectations (as shown below)
  • Breakdown of key headline inflation’s key components such as housing, energy and minerals
  • Housing price rises across the world
  • How commodities are rising… interesting within this is the input costs for food (fertiliser) increased last year, but we won’t see those costs passed on until this year
  • Increased food prices
  • Wages erosion

The result? Lowering projections for growth.

Web3 Innovation continues with a… phone!

Through the tech market turmoil over the last few months, many folks have lost faith in Web3, Blockchain, or its cousin Crypto. Of course, innovation continues to march forward regardless.

This week I learned of a new Web3 mobile phone that Solana Mobile is releasing. The device will cost around $1,000 and be available for delivery in early 2023.

The continued evolution toward web3 from web2 reminds me of the image from Salim Ismail that I’ve spoken about before, where we dismiss the growth of new technology until its growth becomes exponential, as shown in the chart below.

Jim Collins exclusive interview

In preparation for our upcoming event with Jim Collins (details on that event below), where he will be presenting on Level 5 Leadership and First Who, Then What — we’ve obtained a rare interview. In this, he talks about these concepts, why Level 5 Leadership is so important, and why you’ve got to find what’s right for you.

Here’s a quote I particularly liked from the interview:

“Discover within yourself what you are encoded for.
Something that when you do it, you know that you are exceptionally well wired for.”

The biggest problem with most Flywheels
(part two of two)

There’s a big problem with most flywheels, and it’s the main reason they’re destined to fail. The Flywheel Concept originated from Jim Collins’ book Good to Great and outlines a series of actions that a business takes in order to build momentum in the business. The Flywheel Concept is designed to build ever-increasing momentum and growth in a business, thereby making the business more successful over time.

The successful flywheels that are provided as examples are built after a deep understanding of the business’s fundamentals, and yet today we see many people showcasing flywheels that are never going to build momentum in a business.

In this episode two of two, we discuss five things to ensure that your flywheel will fire up and build momentum over time, and what to watch out for.
