Hope you’re Thriving!

Well, we’re all busy in the lead-up to the festive season.

As we move toward the end of 2023, we’re provided with an opportunity to look back.

Two of the significant events this year were inflation along with the subsequent banking crisis, meaning that recession is likely in 2024 and the rise of AI (see below).

For me, the year started with the book Onboarded being named one of the top business books of 2022. Then I released Onboarded for Managers, my third book, in October.

Also, our new coach Andres Zylberberg became a fully established coach, and our growing cohort of clients continued to achieve amazing results, with many profit, cash and revenue records, acquisitions, stock exchange listings, new office openings and overseas expansions. Or, put another way, more clients are compounding their results.

This is very good because our goal is to become Australia’s centre of excellence for coaches helping ambitious mid-market companies to scale.

And in pursuit of this goal, in May this year I decided to have another coach, Anna, join Andres, Briony and myself.

Anna Abelha is an experienced coach and facilitator with over 25 years of experience in the retail industry as a founder and owner of many retail businesses. Anna is a Certified Organisational Coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL), a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and an MBA from Edith Cowan University. As you’d imagine, since May this year, Anna’s recruitment, onboarding and training has been extensive, complimenting her many years as an entrepreneur and coach.

As we continue our 20 Mile March, we’re aiming to add one coach each year across Australia and New Zealand. That’s the idea behind the 20 Mile March, a continual, consistent, relentless march toward your goal. With each seasoned coach we add to our team, we’re growing our years of entrepreneurial and coaching experience and compounding our knowledge and impact through our internal continual improvement process. And as our momentum builds, with more learning, more impact and more clients compounding their results, we’re getting ever closer to becoming Australia’s centre of excellence for coaches helping ambitious mid-market companies to scale.

If you’re interested in learning more about our programs, please reply to this email. As well as 1:1 engagements, we’ve got a new group starting in March 2024, and we’re bringing on new clients for that now.

Our absolute focus is on helping you build a great business you love.

The Right People On The Bus

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘get the right people on the bus from Jim Collins’ book Good to Great.

It’s short for getting the right people on the bus, in the right seats, and doing the right things the right way.

Maybe people aren’t doing things the right way. Maybe they’re in the wrong seats. Maybe this isn’t their bus. I have these conversations almost daily with entrepreneurs.

But what does it mean to have the right people?

The right people don’t need to be motivated. They are self-motivated by the inner drive to produce the best results.

The right people don’t need to be fired up. They are driven to be part of something great.

The right people don’t need to be tightly managed or held accountable. They have values, principles, and standards that negate their need to be managed.

How To Multiply Your Time

This week, I came across a video about time management. Funnily enough, I also had a couple of conversations about Timeboxing, which was ranked as the most useful out of 100 productivity hacks.

The video in question though, is an interesting take on the age-old question of how to spend our time.

In Rory Vaden’s take on time management, he encourages a different approach beyond just speeding through tasks. He suggests a three-dimensional strategy where you not only consider (a) how important and (b) how urgent something is but also © how long it’s going to matter in the grand scheme of things. The main idea here is that you can create more time for yourself by making smart choices now that pay off in the future.

Vaden introduces a tool called the Focus Funnel. This is like a decision-making guide that helps you determine what to tackle first.

You can eliminate tasks that aren’t crucial, automate things that can be done automatically, or delegate tasks to others.

This leaves you with a deliberate choice — should you concentrate on something immediately, or is it better to procrastinate on purpose and do it later?

It’s all about taking control of your time in a way that’s strategic and satisfying.

Hands-On With Google’s New AI

A year ago, OpenAI released ChatGPT 3.5 and received over a million signups within the first five days, going on to be the fastest-growing company ever.

This week, Google released its full multimodal AI called Gemini. And it’s seriously impressive. While ChatGPT might be good for writing text, writing code, or making images, it’s the application of context in Gemini that is staggering. Like the way it can look at balls of wool and provide ideas of what to knit, or identify the similarities between an orange and a fidget spinner (both can be calming), or the way the presenter draws lines or dots and the AI correctly guesses it. Finally, the way it understands maths and science and marks student’s homework is impressive.

While other AIs have been impressive in their capability to provide a language or image-based response to a prompt, this feels much more like it’s straight out of a science fiction movie and has had my head spinning with its possibilities.
