It is normal to feel pressure, stress or anxiety at a time of crisis.

Any individual who sees or encounters times of concern can get influenced here and there mentally, and that’s human nature.

Most indications and symptoms of stress are temporary and will resolve on their own with a short period of time.

If these times of mental crisis keep ongoing for quite a long time, like for weeks, months, and years, it can damage your mental health.

Especially for kids and teenagers, increasing mental stress or depression may impact their brain function, associations with loved ones, and damage their physical health.

Ten standard indications of mental stress include the following:

1. You’re unable to find motivation in work. You feel like you are dragging yourself to work every day. You are losing interest in your monotonous job.

2. You’re not able to focus. You can’t concentrate on work. You forget things quickly. You are unable to keep track of time and deadlines. You keep on looking at anything for too long, just getting lost in another universe.

3. You’re constantly procrastinating. You have a feeling of anxiousness and self-doubt. This constantly stops you from executing your plans.

4. You’re getting cynical. You get irritated too quickly, and you always snap at other people. Low on patience and easy to outburst when working in a group.

5. You’re socially withdrawn. You are not talking about your feelings to anyone. You have disconnected yourself from all your relationships, and you like to stay in a closed space. Solo time seems more important to you now, but when you go solo…you keep drowning in a river of negative thoughts.

6. Your heart’s restless. You are always in a hurry to get done with things. You were always chasing the next thing so that it ends fast. Even when you sit in peace, are you making plans for what you got on your list next?

7. You’re not eating the right way. You are entirely unaware of good eating habits in life. Therefore, you either overeat all the time, or you start eating too little.

8. You’re feeling low on energy. You are constantly exhausted to work on new things. Even when you are not, you keep on shutting your responsibilities by giving this reason.

9. You’re feeling helpless and hopeless. When you sit alone, you always think pessimistically about your existence. No sense of satisfaction or achievement makes you have hope in life. You keep on imagining worst-case scenarios more often, telling yourself — “how helpless I am!”.

10. You’re awake all the time. You have a disturbed sleep cycle. You use social media before going to bed and lose track of sleep time. Insomnia is taking over your brain, making it more restless and unable to get a good night sleep.

The Mental Break — Treatment

Giving yourself a mental break comprises following daily practices that you must do daily to feel more good about yourself and your life:

  • Prioritize & respect yourself. Avoid self-criticism, believe in yourself, treat yourself with kindness and respect your opinions.
  • Practise self-care. Start practising daily physical exercise for 30 minutes. This will help your brain to release more feel-good hormones boosting your energy levels.
  • Meditate Regularly. Mental exercise, like meditation 10 minutes daily will help you increase mental focus and boost your concentration.
  • Surround yourself with good people. Alone time is good for self-interoception, but too much of anything is harmful. Talk to people who really care about you, share your bad and good times with them. Strong connections build your confidence.
  • Be spiritual. Every problem that you face in life has already been solved in spiritual books. Spiritual practices like being grateful, repeating affirmations, praying to god, or reading holy religious texts and stories will calm your brain. These will give you a new perspective on life and open doors that you never explored.
  • Avoid bad habits. Quit drinking, smoking, and drugs. As per Vedic Indian science, these have Tamasic qualities, leading you towards being more negative in life.
  • Get some professional help. There is nothing to be guilty about being a mental health patient. Do not hide it under the sheets. Get out and look for professional mental health counselling in case nothing works for you.

I hope this may help you clarify what you have been doing wrong so far in life and now what you can do to fix your mental health.
