Every night we watch True Detective, Season 4. It’s, strangely, relatable. We don’t investigate a murder of men frozen in ice, but we, too, live in a night country. Because what is this if not a long, cold, dark night? We’re stuck in this and we hate the ignorant world outside that isn’t. But we also find comfort in this. At least, people here understand that to be happy is a privilege and to be struggling is as normal as anything else in life.
True Detective is a gruesome show, but it didn’t shock me as much as what viewers wrote about it on Metacritic. It’s pretty negative, and many viewers are not happy with what people do and how they look like in the show. I remember reading a comment by someone who didn’t like the show because women in it behave like men, and men behave like women. I find this always so confusing.
If a “woman” is capable of behaving like a “man”, that means such behaviour is as natural to her as any other. The same goes for men. We can’t do what we can’t do, we can’t mimic what we can’t mimic. If anything, the fact that we can behave similarly to the opposite sex proves just one simple thing: our behaviour is not sex. Our behaviour is more about stereotypes, patterns, codes and copy-pastes we learn to exhibit in public and in private.
