According to the US technology portal The Verge, Austin Russell is the youngest self-made billionaire in the United States at 25. Russell specializes in the manufacture of LiDAR sensors for robotics as the CEO & founder of his Silicon Valley start-up, Luminar Technologies.
What exactly are LiDAR sensors, and how do they work? This is a “primary technology of the future for highly automated, fully automated, and autonomous driving, as well as other automated processes,” according to Jenoptik, a German technology company.
The sensors can detect objects and calculate distances, among other things. As a result, factors like road safety, in particular, may be improved.
LiDAR creates the car’s field of view

Russell’s work has been very well regarded by scientists and a large proportion of automobile manufacturers. According to an article in the German news magazine Der Stern, the start-up took a huge step and went public in December 2020.
The value of the 25-year-old’s is estimated to be nearly 2 billion euros.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and the world’s richest man, has been a vocal critic of the LiDAR technology. Musk has called Russell’s LiDAR sensors a “mistake” and anticipated “destruction” for automobile manufacturers who rely on them on many occasions.
Russell, meanwhile, believes that LiDAR sensors are the only way to achieve fully autonomous driving. “Our aim is to make self-driving cars safe and commonplace,” he says. “And I don’t think we’ll stop until we see a Luminar product in every car ever built.”
