Oracle and Exabyte Partnership Providing Materials Modeling to Scientists Around the Globe.

The OCI-Exabyte Collaboration

In December 2019, Exabyte.io started a pilot program sponsored by our partners at the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Oracle for Research. The program provided free access to Exabyte.io and its computational resources hosted on OCI to materials scientists with valid academic affiliations.

We immediately received 39 responses spanning five continents geographically and a diverse set of complex research problems. Here’s a summary from two participating scientists on what they there able to achieve with Exabyte.io.

How did you learn about Exabyte.io?

From an advertisement on Researchgate.

Why did you use the Exabyte.io platform instead of other solutions?

I like the friendly interface and job sharing.

What results were you able to achieve?

I saved time by being able to easily design and run calculations and obtain ncessary data for an upcoming manuscript in a target journal: Physical Review Letters.

Any other thoughts and/or comments?

I think more researchers should join this platform and share their work (e.g. calculation jobs), as this way it would be better for everyone.

How did you learn about Exabyte.io?

I found out about Exabyte.io on the Web, and contacted Dr. Timur Bazhirov, to obtain an account. I got the account but I was not able to use it as I was not familiar with it. Then I worked with Dr. Bazhirov, he is very cooperative and friendly. His help was instrumental in completing some of my research targets. Thanks, Exabyte.io!

Why did you use the Exabyte.io platform instead of other solutions?

I was stuck replying to referee comments for one of my publications, because I had no facility to complete the required calculation. With the Exabyte.io platform my problems were solved. Exabyte.io platform is very, very efficient due to its high computing speed, friendly customer support (they respond very quickly to support questions). The interfaces are convenient to use and accelerate research.

What results were you able to achieve?

I have completed the calculations for three research targets. One manuscript will be accepted, I hope, this month. Another one is ready for submission, and the third one is in progress, my student is working to analyze the data now.

The First publication, “Functionalization of Monolayer-CdS by Metal and Non-Metal Elemental Substitution: First-Principle Understanding”, is awaiting a decision at the Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials.

2nd publication, “Toward controlled thermoelectric properties of Pb and Sb co-doped nanostructured Thallium Telluride for energy applications”, is ready for resubmission at Materials Research.

Editor’s note: the publication(s) is/are now available at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304885319339733 (DOI: 10.1016/j.jmmm.2020.167212).

Any other thoughts and/or comments?

As we know research never stops. In my country, we do not have such a facility.
I would be glad to continue my work on Exabyte.io if there is a possibility. I am planning to obtain research funds to continue using the platform as a paid user.

How did you learn about Exabyte.io?

I found out about Exabyte.io on the Web, and communicated with Dr. Timur Bazhirov, to obtain an account.

Why did you use the Exabyte.io platform instead of other solutions?

Being new to computational physics, I was looking for a computational environment that was friendly, easy to use, and will help consolidate the knowledge I had to make it easy for advancement. Here I found the right platform, excellent to advance my ambitions.

What results were you able to achieve?

I was able to run many calculations and learn much about the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Zinc Oxide, co-doped with transition metals and some electronegative elements. This work will serve as a basis for future research and publications.

Any other thoughts and/or comments?

This program has helped a lot in my found research area

Afterthought

At Exabyte.io, our goal is to empower researchers with the best digital tools to unlock the power and increase the impact of modeling and simulations on the development of new materials. This quick study demonstrates how it can be done in practice. We are excited about how much can be accomplished by brilliant scientists all over the world with a little help from our platform.

Our special thanks to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Oracle For Research, and to participating scientists.
