Exceptional Erotica on Hiatus
The pub is closing to submissions, but we will be celebrating with two anthologies next year
Exceptional Erotica readers and writers:
We have a few announcements to make, with the bad news first.
The publication will go on an indefinite hiatus as of November 1st. This is for a number of personal and environmental reasons, and we came to the decision after a lot of thought and hand-wringing. We can’t say if or when we’ll be back, but it feels like now is the time to step away.
We’re proud to be the second-largest erotica publication on Medium, with nearly 300 writers and more than 1,200 stories since we started in August 2022. That’s a lot of trust placed in us, and we’re blown away by it. We are eternally grateful to anyone who has ever submitted a story or read one. We’ve loved reading all the stories from new and veteran writers over the past three years, and we’ve met some incredible people along the way. So we close the doors with great deal of fond memories and sadness.
But! We’re going out with a few, erm, bangs.
We are planning on two anthologies for 2026 as a celebration of the excellent work we’ve been lucky to publish (and as a celebration of monsterfucking, because, well, obviously.)
One will be a Best Of anthology. If you submitted a story to Exceptional Erotica (it does not have to be currently in the pub) and would like it considered for inclusion, please e-mail jkmill_writer@outlook.com with the story, when (roughly) it appeared, and your pen name. We’re looking at next summer for publication.
The second anthology will be a monster smut collection. We welcome new stories or those previously published in Exceptional Erotica. This collection would be published in October 2026. E-mail jkmill_writer@outlook.com with your story.
More details:
- Stories should be between 1,500 and 5,000 words. Please send stories in .doc or .docx format. We may consider longer stories that we published as series in the publication.
- No more than two submissions per writer.
- The submission deadline for both anthologies is January 1, 2026.
- We expect to announce acceptance decisions in the spring.
- Writers keep their rights, proceeds will be shared, and stories will appear on Kindle Unlimited for three months.
- We plan to do both e-book and print editions.

Exceptional Erotica has been more than a publication — it’s been a community, and one we’re grateful for every single day. The doors are closing, but they aren’t being padlocked. Maybe one day we’ll throw them open, and welcome all your exceptional erotica again.
