The Backpacker

We met at a shelter and we needed to fight the cold

The day had started with the sun coming from behind the clouds, and I knew I could make good time before I got to the place I was spending the night — it was this shelter in the middle of the woods that had a shower for backpackers, but you had to share rooms with other of people.

It was the middle of the week during low season, so I was sure not many people would be there. It didn’t bother me anyway, because I was used to having people around me all the time.

You don’t really become a traveler around half of the world without being open to new experiences.

And speaking of those, I definitely had a new experience this time.

In the middle of the afternoon I felt a wind change. The clouds formed overhead, and before I got to the shelter the rain began to fall. At first it wasn’t too bad, but in twenty minutes it was pelting me down without mercy.

At least I made it to the shelter, but I was completely wet and needing a shower.

The problem: when it rained the place got no electricity, and since there was no water heater, that meant a cold shower. I was already wet after the rain, there was no sense in taking another cold shower, so I just got into a room, thankfully all by myself…
