The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
The poem — not that poem, the one by that pining, pathetic Yeats — came to her again as she emerged from the forest, well south of Montrose, as she had expected. The sun was rising in the sky, but when she gave the vale behind her a final look, it looked as dark as ever, swallowing the dawn as it had the twilight.
She had miles to go, that was true, and she’d have to do it naked, dirt and mud caked all over her, a glue for leaves to stick to. She brushed as many as she could out of her tangled hair, then gave up and started walking. Miles to go before I sleep, she thought. And I could sleep for a week.
But not before she kept some promises. She opened her palm to look at her prize, her plunder.
Her proof.
