Nadella with the iPhone at Dreamforce tech conference.

Four years ago, people who gathered at Dreamforce conference witnessed an extraordinary thing. Microsoft CEO Sathya Nadella appeared on stage holding an iPhone which is a product from their longtime rival company — Apple. Not only that, but he also started demonstrating Microsoft apps on the iPhone.

I’m going to first start on this iPhone, and it’s not my phone, but it is an iPhone…. It’s a pretty unique iPhone. In fact, I’d like to call it the ‘iPhone Pro’ because it’s got all of the Microsoft software and applications on it.

This is really an extraordinary thing. People usually don’t talk about their rivals or their products on the public stage. But Nadella not only showed the product, but he also used the product for demonstration.

He further said, “Outlook is, of course, an email client, but here is the fascinating thing — it’s the best email client on iOS for Gmail and Exchange.”. When he was done with the iOS, Nadella moved on to the Windows Phone, which he quipped, “Let’s move on to my Windows Phone, which I use more often.”.

Many people use the outlook email and it was hard to access their email from the iPhone. But from this moment, they can start using the email client directly from the iPhone. This is clearly a win-win situation for both companies, particularly to their customers.

In a speech Abraham Lincoln delivered during Civil War, he referred to the Southerners as fellow human beings. An elderly lady scold and said that those are the enemies who must be destroyed. “Why, madam,” Lincoln simply replied, “do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”

Apple is earning several billion in every year just allowing its rival company Google to be the default search engine in its products. This is another example of a win-win situation. It matters a lot to Google. Because all the searches from Apple products are routed to Google and Google makes tons of money from this. Also, the other benefit is, people won’t use Bing-an another search engine which is from their rival — Microsoft.

Robert Greene wrote the book “48 laws of power” in 1998. The laws mentioned in the book are brutal and unethical. But clearly its a reflection of those who are in high power and wants to remain in power. The Book is a must-read for anyone who wants to become an entrepreneur and you can get it from Amazon.
