How some people react to my documentary. (Image: LA Times)

Any film titled “Leaving God” is going to piss-off a few people. I was well aware of that when I began making my documentary. I also knew it was the perfect title.

The film takes an unbiased investigative look at a major cultural shift happening in America — a shift away from religion and God. It also shares my related personal story — growing up with Catholic programming and then spending 40-years seeking Truth and a better understanding of God. I really didn’t care if the film and title ruffled some feathers.

Because the film had a strong personal narrative, making it was a true labor of love. I wanted it to be perfect and I took my time making it. And, though I was pleased with the result, with no distribution deal or promotional budget, I simply posted it online expecting nothing.

After several months, not surprisingly, it only had a few dozen views. Then something strange happened. Literally overnight it got thousands of views. I thought it was bogus. Then I looked at the analytics.

All the views were coming from one new source… something called topdocumentaryfilms.com. That website featured a huge collection of top documentaries from around the world, all for free. Somehow they had found my film and featured it on their main page — with a great review. I was dumbfounded.

In the coming weeks I watched as the views continued to shoot up. Currently, the film has over 36,000 views from 98 countries. And the numbers keep going up.

I should also mention it won a Hollywood International Documentary Film award and got some great reviews.
