Overflow of Affection

When you have an overflow of love in your heart, you've got to give it away

Good morning! Have you ever felt like you just had an abundance of love stored up in your heart?

Growing up with a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone in the mid-2000s, I listened exclusively to just two music artists: Michael W. Smith and Hillsong.

There's a classic Michael W. Smith song that I've listened to probably hundreds of times, and at a certain point, it says this: "Love isn't love until you give it away."

Now, although I'm only twenty and have never had a romantic relationship, I do try to examine society and understand why people do what they do, and it turns out that sometimes young teens get into relationships not because it's the cool thing to do, but because they have an abundance of love that they feel the need to share with another human being.

I don't know if you've ever experienced this—although you likely have—but every now and then, I get these random bursts of affection that rise to the top of my heart; it's not necessarily love for any particular person, it's just a sort of affection that demands to be given away to someone, so I usually end up writing someone a text or email and fill it with whatever abundance of affection it seems I've randomly stumbled across.

I might needlessly and annoyingly continue to thank somebody for their friendship, or I might give them a few really heartfelt compliments, and that generally keeps my heart at bay. Probably sounds weird unless you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Anyways, I think the reason some people get hastily into relationships—and I say "some" because it's definitely not true for "most"—is simply that they've got too much love in their heart and genuinely want to give it away to somebody who is willing to receive it.

I read a great Stoic quote a couple weeks ago that said, "If you wish to be loved, love." My recommendation today for living a more fulfilled love is simply to love those around us, withholding nothing.

If we get an overflow of kindness, let's share that with people. What's the worst that could happen?

God bless you, have a great day.
