An experienced trader will always have a well-planned strategy as well as a good analysis of the market conditions before executing a trade.
As the classic finance adage goes, “Always buy low, sell high.” However, like almost everything in life, it’s easier said than done, as it can be difficult to predict with certainty on when the price is going to go up or down, especially in a volatile market such as cryptocurrency. The best thing a trader could do is research extensively and practice technical/fundamental analysis.
After planning, there are two options: going long or short.
A long/short investment strategy is usually associated with hedge funds, but a growing number of cryptocurrency investors are using the same approach to diversify their portfolio and increase their profits. The cryptocurrency market is one of the most volatile investment assets and a long/short strategy means traders can make a profit in situations where prices rise and fall, both of which inevitably happen throughout the year in the volatile cryptocurrency market.
Long
Taking a long position means a trader anticipate a particular asset to increase in value in the future. Executing a long position is simple; a trader just buys a cryptocurrency today and wait for it to rise in value in the future.
When the price goes up, the trader could either sell or wait for it to rise more. Hodlers love to hold cryptocurrency forever, however, historically that doesn’t seem like a great strategy for the most profit. Even if Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency, it would have to undergo many market cycles and a trader would miss out on great opportunities.
Eg 1 — Going long on 1,00 BTC at $10,000, the transaction costs you $1,000,000. If you are able to sell BTC at $12,000, you will receive $1,200,000 and net a $200,000 profit.
Eg 2 — Going long without a time period, your potential profit is unlimited since the price of any assets can rise indefinitely. The price of BTC could go up to $20,000, $50,000, $500,000 or $1,000,000.
The flip-side to a long position is a decrease in the value of the cryptocurrency. If BTC sold at $9,000, the value of entire BTC portfolio will only be $900,000 instead of $1,000,000. $100,000 will be lost.
Short
Taking a short position is the exact opposite of longing. It means that a trader expects the price of a particular cryptocurrency to go down. Basically, the trader bets against the price of cryptocurrency due to factors such as believing an asset is currently overvalued and will correct its price soon or because a trader anticipates an event that could lead to its downward pressure in price or some other factors that the price might go down.
A short position, therefore, involves selling a particular token. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t believe in the crypto project anymore. In fact, it is common practice to buy back a cryptocurrency at the end of a short position when the trader deems that the price is sufficiently low enough and it is time to buy the dip.
Conclusion
Long and short positions are used by investors to achieve different results, and oftentimes both long and short positions are established simultaneously by an investor to leverage or produce profits on a cryptocurrency. There is a wide variety of long and short positions that traders may adopt. A knowledgeable investor will have grasped the many advantages and disadvantages of each individual type of long and short positions before attempting to incorporate these strategies in a trading plan.
